📖 1 John 2:1–11 〈 Christ Our Advocate, a Life That Walks in the Light Through Love 〉

10 Anyone who loves their brother or sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.

✨ God’s Grace in Dealing with Sin, Jesus Christ Our Advocate

The apostle John begins by saying, “I write this to you so that you will not sin.” Yet he does not ignore reality. He continues, “But if anybody does sin.” These two statements accurately describe the believer’s life. We are called to fight against sin, yet we remain those who can still fall. At that moment, we have an Advocate. Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, stands before God on our behalf. Our assurance does not rest in the completeness of our repentance or the strength of our resolve, but in the faithfulness of our Advocate.

✨ Not Works but Grace—Yet Grace Transforms Life

John says that whoever claims to know God but does not keep His commands is a liar. This is not a demand to prove salvation by works. Rather, it is a declaration that true faith inevitably changes the direction of one’s life. Grace does not make us take sin lightly. On the contrary, the more deeply we experience God’s love, the more our desire to obey His will grows. Obedience, therefore, is the fruit of those who have been saved.

✨ An Old Yet New Commandment, Walking in the Light of Love

The commandment John speaks of is new, and yet it is old. It is the message heard from the beginning, now revealed anew in Jesus Christ. To walk in the light means to live a life that loves one’s brothers and sisters. Hatred remains a mark of life in darkness. Love, however, is the evidence that the gospel is truly alive within us.

✨ The Gospel Moves Us into the Light

First John chapter 2 is not written to unsettle believers. Rather, it offers clear guidance and comfort to those whose faith may be shaken. We do not dwell in the light because we are perfect, but because we are in Christ, who is the Light. It is His advocacy and His love that hold us fast.

🙏 Prayer

Righteous God, we thank You for appointing Jesus Christ as our Advocate, even as You know our weakness. Help us to rely not on our own works, but on the righteousness of Christ. May that grace bear fruit in lives marked by love. Enable us to live in the light and to reveal the gospel by loving our brothers and sisters.

🔍 Application

  • Instead of hiding your sin, come in repentance to Christ, our Advocate.

  • Examine whether your confession of faith is shaping the direction of your life.

  • Today, choose to love one person through your words and your attitude.

💡 Meditation Point

Christ is our Advocate, and His love enables us to live in the light. Faith is not about perfection, but about a life upheld by grace. Walk in love today, and live as one who builds the church and neighbors through the light of the gospel.
