1 John 4:1–12 “Discerning by Love, Living by the Cross”

📖 1 John 4:1–12 “Discerning by Love, Living by the Cross”

10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Test the spirits—the standard is Jesus Christ

The apostle John exhorts us, “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). Some teachings speak of love on the surface, yet remove the incarnation and the cross of Jesus Christ from the center. The true Spirit confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. This confession holds fast to the heart of the gospel—that God entered history for the sake of sinners. The standard for discernment is always Christ.

The source of love that drives out fear

John testifies that God is love (1 John 4:8). Yet this love is not a vague emotion. God sent his one and only Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 4:10). Love begins not with our resolve, but with God’s sovereign grace. When this love is known, the fear of condemnation is driven away, and our hearts are filled with confidence.

Received love must overflow

No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in us (1 John 4:12). The invisible God is made visible to the world through the love of a community transformed by the gospel. Love is not the condition of salvation; it is the fruit of salvation. Those who have been loved by grace learn to love their neighbors with patience.

🙏 Prayer

God of love, we thank you for loving us first and for sending your one and only Son. Help us to discern the spirits by the standard of the gospel rather than the voices of the world. Engrave deeply in our hearts the love that began at the cross. Replace fear with confidence, and lead us into lives that pour out the love we have received to others.

🔍 Application

• Examine whether the ideas and messages you follow today are rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
• Redefine love—not as mere emotion, but through the grace of the cross.
• Practice the love of the gospel toward one person close to you through patience and service.

💡 Meditation Point

The starting point of love is not you, but God. Receive by faith the love confirmed at the cross. Then, with that love, build up the church and your neighbor. Today, choose to discern in the light of the gospel and to live it out in love.
