1 John 5:13–21 < Assurance of Eternal Life, Living in the True God >
📖 1 John 5:13–21 < Assurance of Eternal Life, Living in the True God >
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God
so that you may know that you have eternal life.
✨ The Purpose of What Is Written — Unshakable Assurance of Salvation
John writes this letter with a clear and deliberate purpose:
“so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
God desires His children to live with confidence and assurance in their salvation.
This assurance does not arise from our emotions or circumstances.
It rests on God’s unchanging promise,
grounded in faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Eternal life is not merely a future hope.
It is a present gift already given to those who believe.
✨ The Foundation of Confidence — Prayer According to God’s Will
John teaches that assurance of eternal life naturally leads to prayer.
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God:
that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” (5:14).
This does not mean that God grants everything we desire.
Rather, prayer according to God’s will is the place
where our hearts are aligned with His purposes.
A believer who has assurance is not anxious or impatient.
Knowing that God hears,
we are able to wait and entrust everything to Him.
✨ A Clear Distinction — The True God and False Gods
John concludes his letter with a striking exhortation:
“Dear children, keep yourselves from idols” (5:21).
An idol is not only a carved image made of wood or stone.
Anything we rely on more than God becomes an idol.
Success, security, approval,
even religious devotion itself can replace God
if they take His rightful place.
John boldly declares that Jesus Christ is
“the true God and eternal life” (5:20).
True life is found only in Jesus Christ.
To remain in Him is the believer’s true safety and freedom.
🙏 Prayer
Gracious God, we thank You
for giving us eternal life in Jesus Christ.
Help us stand not on shifting emotions or circumstances,
but on the unchanging truth of Your Word.
Align our prayers with Your will,
and guard our hearts from hidden idols we cannot easily see.
Today, may we abide in the true God
and live with confidence in the eternal life You have given us.
🔍 Application
• Examine whether your assurance of salvation rests on God’s promises, not on your feelings.
• Reflect on whether your prayers are shaped by God’s will rather than your own desires.
• Honestly consider whether anything has taken God’s place in your heart.
💡 Meditation Point
1 John chapter 5 leads believers from fear to assurance.
Knowing the true God gives clarity and direction to life.
As those who possess eternal life,
turn away from falsehood and remain in the true God today.
When we abide in Him, our lives are not shaken.
