Faith is not a feeling. It is a life redirected by confessing Jesus as Lord. #GospelCentered #FaithConfession #Reformed
Why My Faith Confession Is Not a Story but a Confession
— A Gospel-Centered Reading of Romans 10:9–10
“When did I become a Christian?”
Many people answer like this:
“One day, my heart felt on fire.”
“I couldn’t stop crying.”
“I clearly felt God at that moment.”
Emotions matter.
But Scripture never defines faith by emotion.
It defines faith by confession.
Faith Is Not an Experience — It Is a Change of Direction
The apostle Paul writes:
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’
and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved.”
(Romans 10:9, NIV)
Two things are unmistakably clear.
-
Confession of the mouth: Jesus is not an advisor, but Lord
-
Belief of the heart: The resurrection is not a metaphor, but a real event
Faith is not adding a religious experience to your life.
It is the moment when the ownership of your life changes.
Testimony Is Not About Me
Testimonies often drift into this pattern:
-
How far I fell
-
How dramatic my change was
-
How passionately I live now
But in biblical testimony,
the subject is always God, never the self.
“Faith comes from hearing the message,
and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”
(Romans 10:17, NIV)
A testimony is simply this:
how God called me through the gospel.
Conversion Is an Act of Grace (Sola Gratia)
Reformed theology speaks clearly.
-
I did not find God
-
God found me
-
I made a decision, but only after God awakened my heart
This is called effectual calling.
The ears are opened.
The heart is opened.
And the gospel is heard as truth.
That is why true testimony leaves no room for pride.
Only gratitude remains.
Try Framing Your Faith This Way
Ask yourself today:
-
Do I confess Jesus as a helper, or as Lord?
-
Is my faith centered on feelings, or on the gospel facts?
-
Is the subject of my testimony me, or God?
It does not need to be long.
It does not need to be dramatic.
But it must be the gospel.
🔎 Key Summary
-
Faith is not emotion, but a life-changing confession of Jesus as Lord
-
Testimony is not self-expression, but witness to God’s work
-
Conversion is not human decision, but divine grace
