Matthew 3:11–17 〈 Heaven Is Opened, and God’s Will Is Revealed 〉
📖 Matthew 3:11–17 〈 Heaven Is Opened, and God’s Will Is Revealed 〉
17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
✨ When Heaven Is Opened, God’s Redemptive Plan Begins
John proclaimed a baptism of repentance in the wilderness, saying,
“I baptize you with water for repentance… He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Matt. 3:11).
John’s ministry was preparation; the coming of Jesus Christ was fulfillment.
Though Jesus was without sin, He stepped into the place of sinners.
This shows that salvation does not begin with human repentance, but with God’s initiative.
Salvation always starts with God’s grace, not with human decision.
✨ A Public Ministry That Began with Obedience
When Jesus came to be baptized, John tried to deter Him.
But Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness” (Matt. 3:15).
The “righteousness” spoken of here is complete obedience before God.
Jesus’ public ministry did not begin with power, but with obedience.
The path to the cross had already begun at the Jordan River.
This is also the starting point of our faith.
What matters more than zeal is a life surrendered in obedience to God’s will.
✨ The Gospel Witnessed by the Triune God
At the moment of Jesus’ baptism, heaven was opened, the Spirit descended like a dove, and the voice of the Father was heard:
“This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
This scene powerfully summarizes the heart of the gospel.
The Father plans, the Son fulfills through obedience, and the Spirit confirms the work.
Salvation is accomplished by the sovereign grace of the Triune God.
Therefore, believers have nothing to boast of—only grace to cling to.
✨ The Gospel Is the News That Heaven Has Been Opened
Matthew chapter 3 begins with the declaration that “heaven was opened.”
It proclaims that the barrier between God and humanity has been opened once again.
In Jesus Christ, a broken relationship has begun to be restored.
For Christians, faith is not self-validation or religious achievement.
It is living in trust that heaven has already been opened.
Even in failure and weakness, we must remember that God’s pleasure has already been declared over us in Christ.
🙏 Prayer
Holy God, we thank You that Jesus Christ, who was without sin, stood in our place.
We confess that we can never stand before You in our own righteousness.
Teach us to rely only on Christ’s obedience and grace.
Help us to seek obedience over power, and Your will over visible success.
May we live today in the hope of the gospel—that heaven has been opened.
🔍 Application
• Examine whether you are seeking power and results before obedience in your faith.
• Identify one specific area where God is calling you to surrender in obedience.
• Trust that God’s pleasure has already been given to you in Christ, and live today with confidence.
💡 Meditation Point
Jesus’ baptism opened the door of salvation through humility and obedience.
Heaven was not opened by human merit, but by the obedience of the Son of God.
Today, fix your eyes on the open heaven in Christ, and choose to begin by grace and to live by grace.
