📖 Matthew 4:12–25 < The Light of the Gospel Shining in the Darkness: The Beginning of Calling and Restoration >
16 “The people living in darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.”
✨ God’s Work Begins in the Darkness
After John the Baptist was arrested, Jesus withdrew to Galilee.
From a human perspective, this appeared to be a retreat.
Yet it was precisely in this moment of darkness that God began His work of salvation.
Galilee was a marginalized and despised region.
But God shines His light in the darkest places.
The gospel always begins in the very center of human despair.
✨ Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven Has Come Near
Jesus’ first sermon was simple and direct: “Repent.”
Repentance is not merely feeling sorrow over sin.
It is a decisive change of direction—a transfer of lordship over one’s life.
The kingdom of heaven is not a distant future reality;
it is God’s reign breaking into our present.
The gospel is the event in which our King is changed.
✨ The Call Begins with Grace
Jesus called fishermen—not trained elites,
but ordinary people working faithfully in their daily lives.
“Follow me.”
This call came without conditions.
It was not based on qualifications, but on grace.
They left everything and followed Him
because they were seized by grace.
A true disciple is one who places Jesus at the very center of life.
✨ Word and Healing: The Restoring Kingdom of God
Jesus taught, proclaimed the good news, and healed the sick.
The kingdom of God is not merely words.
It is power that restores broken bodies and wounded hearts.
The sick, the demon-possessed, and the suffering came to Him.
The gospel renews the whole person.
The church is called to be a channel of this restoration.
🙏 Prayer

we thank You for shining the light of the gospel upon us

Do not let us delay repentance.
Enable us to respond in obedience to Your call today.
Help us remember that we were called not by merit, but by grace,
and lead us to follow You in every area of our lives.
