Matthew 8:14–22 〈 Called Beyond Healing, Called to Follow Jesus 〉
📖 Matthew 8:14–22 〈 Called Beyond Healing, Called to Follow Jesus 〉
22 Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
✨ Jesus’ Touch Restores Life
When Jesus entered Peter’s house, He saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
With a word and a simple touch, Jesus healed her (Matt. 8:15).
When the fever left, she got up immediately and began to serve Him.
Grace never leaves us where we are.
It redirects our lives and leads us to serve Jesus.
True healing goes beyond physical recovery—it reaches the point where the lordship of our lives is transformed.
✨ Grace Leads Not to Comfort, but to a Call
Next, several people express their desire to follow Jesus.
Yet His response is unexpected:
“Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (Matt. 8:20).
To another disciple who wanted to delay obedience because of a funeral, Jesus calls him to follow now.
Following Jesus is not a path guaranteed by safety or convenience.
It is a decisive act of laying down our own priorities and placing His call at the center of our lives.
✨ Called by Grace Alone, Following with Our Whole Lives
Christian faith does not begin with our choice of Jesus.
It begins with His gracious initiative—He comes to us and calls us first.
Just as Peter’s mother-in-law responded to healing with immediate service,
grace inevitably bears the fruit of obedience.
Faith is not merely spoken; it changes the direction of our lives.
To follow Jesus is to surrender the ownership of our lives to Him.
🙏 Prayer
Gracious Lord,
We praise You for coming to us, healing us, and calling us by grace.
Forgive us for trying to follow You on our own terms, seeking comfort and calculation.
Help us to live by grace alone and to follow Jesus as the Lord of our lives today.
As those who have been healed, lead us into lives of obedience and service.
Amen.
