📖 Matthew 15:1–20 < The Hypocritical Religious Person and the Genuine Believer >
18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.
19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.
✨ Outwardly Religious, Yet Far in Heart
The Pharisees kept their traditions, yet their hearts were far from God. Jesus rebuked them, saying, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” (15:8). This means that not only outward behavior, but even the deepest part of the heart is affected by sin. Therefore, religious zeal alone cannot make us stand before God. This is connected to the doctrine of total depravity.
✨ The Problem Is Not the Mouth, but the Heart
Jesus taught that the source of defilement is not food, but the “heart.” Evil thoughts, murder, adultery, and false testimony all come from within. This shows that what we need is not merely the form of the law, but restoration of relationship with God. It is not external rules, but the imputed righteousness of Christ that must be credited to us.
✨ True Faith Begins with a Changed Heart
Genuine faith does not reject tradition, but moves beyond it into a real and living relationship with God. Without the inner illumination of the Holy Spirit, the heart cannot be renewed. When the Spirit grants us a new heart, hypocrisy collapses and true repentance begins. This is the application of salvation, accomplished within the covenant of grace.
🙏 Prayer
Holy God, forgive our lip-service faith. Keep us from resting in outward forms, and renew our hearts by Your Spirit. Help us rely on the righteousness of Christ, and lead us into a life of sincere repentance and obedience.
🔍 Application
• Examine whether you have mistaken tradition and habit for true faith.
• Honestly search the motives of your heart before the Word.
• Seek the help of the Spirit and practice at least one act of sincere obedience today.
💡 Meditation Point
Hypocrisy decorates the outside, but the gospel renews the heart. The formal religious person fears people; the genuine believer fears God. Stand today not in legalistic pride, but in the grace of Christ. There true freedom and hope begin.
