Matthew 16:13–28 < Walking the Way of the Cross Through Confession of Faith >
📖 Matthew 16:13–28 < Walking the Way of the Cross Through Confession of Faith >
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
✨ “Who do you say I am?”
Jesus asked His disciples,
“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
Then He asked again,
“But what about you? Who do you say I am?” (16:15).
Faith is a confession revealed in relationship.
Peter declared,
“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
This was not human insight, but revelation from the Father (16:17).
Today we stand before the same question.
Do I know Jesus merely as a comforter or moral teacher?
Or do I confess Him as my Savior?
We must examine ourselves.
✨ The Church Built on Confession
Jesus said He would build His church on this confession (16:18).
The church is the community of those who confess Christ as Lord.
It is the gathering of those called by God’s sovereign grace.
The depth of the gospel and repentance through the Word are essential.
True confession begins by the work of the Holy Spirit and takes root in Scripture.
Confession is both a personal commitment and the foundation that builds a community.
✨ The Way of the Cross
Yet Jesus immediately spoke about the cross (16:21).
When Peter tried to stop Him, Jesus said,
“Get behind me, Satan!” (16:23).
The path of confessing Christ is not only glory.
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (16:24).
The cross is not about seeking suffering intentionally.
It is living according to God’s will rather than our own.
It means acknowledging Christ as Lord in relational conflict,
and in choices that seem like loss.
At the end of this path, we do not lose life — we find true life (16:25).
🙏 Prayer
Living God,
Thank You for enabling me to confess Jesus as my Lord and Messiah.
Do not let my confession remain only words,
but lead me to walk the way of the cross.
Help me follow Your will rather than human thinking.
In suffering, hold me fast to true life.
🔍 Application
• Honestly examine whom you confess Jesus to be.
• Reflect on a recent decision where you tried to avoid the cross.
• Explain the gospel to one person and help confession become life.
💡 Meditation Point
Confession is the beginning; the cross is the evidence.
Do not let your knowledge of Christ remain in your head.
Let it redirect your life.
Through those who confess Christ as Lord,
God continues to build His church
and prepares true glory at the end of the cross.
