📖 Matthew 18:1–9 < A Life that Pursues Humility and Breaks with Sin >
4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
✨ Who Is the Greatest? — The Kingdom Begins with Humility
The disciples asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” But Jesus placed a child among them. In that culture, a child had no social power or status. The Lord presented humility as the standard of the kingdom.
We were created in the image of God, yet through the fall our whole being became corrupted (Romans 3:10). Therefore, the instinct to exalt ourselves springs from sin. True conversion is a turning from a self-exalting life to a God-centered one.
✨ Breaking with Sin — Radical Resolve Is Required
Jesus said, “If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away” (Matthew 18:8). This is not a literal command for physical amputation, but a call to decisive separation from sin.
John Owen said, “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you.” We have already been justified through the cross of Christ. Therefore, the fight against sin is not a condition for salvation, but the fruit of grace received.
✨ Do Not Cause Little Ones to Stumble
The Lord warns, “If anyone causes one of these little ones… to stumble…” Salvation is not merely individual; it is brought to maturity within the church. Humility does not end with personal meekness. It leads to responsibility — to lift up the weak and support those who are falling.
🙏 Prayer
Holy God, help us lay down our pride that seeks to rise above others. Make us humble like children before You. In the grace of Christ, enable us to decisively cut off sin. May our community never cause the little ones to stumble, but build one another up in the gospel.
🔍 Application
What sinful habit must you cut off today? Make a concrete decision.
Are you pursuing status and recognition, or humility before God?
Identify one specific action you can take to strengthen someone weaker in your community.
💡 Meditation Point
Greatness in the kingdom differs from the standards of the world. To go low is to be lifted high. Do not compromise with sin; break from it in grace. When the Holy Spirit renews us, the church grows deep roots, and the gospel spreads through relationships. Stand before the Lord today like a child.
