Matthew 18:21–35 “The Gospel of the Cross in Forgiveness”
📖 Matthew 18:21–35 “The Gospel of the Cross in Forgiveness”
35 This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.
✨ The Position of One Whose Unpayable Debt Was Canceled
Peter asked, “How many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”
He then told the parable of a servant who owed ten thousand talents. He was forgiven a debt he could never repay in a lifetime. Yet he refused to forgive a fellow servant who owed him a hundred denarii.
This parable reflects our own condition. We owed God a debt of sin we could never repay. Yet God canceled that debt at the cross.
Forgiveness is the fruit in the life of one who has received grace.
✨ The Cross Creates New Relationships
The servant failed to forgive because he understood grace intellectually but had not embraced it in his heart. The cross is more than “forgiveness of sins”; it is the power that transforms the heart.
One who has been forgiven a great debt cannot cling to a small one. The gospel renews relationships. It breaks the chain of resentment and revenge and opens the way to reconciliation and restoration. This is the tangible fruit of grace.
Salvation is received freely, but that grace inevitably transforms life.
✨ Forgiveness Is Not Emotion, but Obedient Faith
Forgiveness is not easy. Wounds still hurt. Yet we cling not to emotion but to the gospel. We confess in faith, “I am already forgiven,” and we obey.
Forgiveness is first a confession made before the cross, before it is an act toward another person. When we do so, God softens our hardened hearts and rebuilds the community.
🙏 Prayer
Gracious God, thank You for canceling the debt of sin we could never repay through the cross. Help us not to forget the grace we have received. Grant us faith to forgive from the heart. Let us hold fast not to our wounds but to the gospel. Build our church and families upon forgiveness.
🔍 Application
Confess again today that you are already forgiven.
Lay down the name of any lingering resentment before the Lord.
Take the first step toward reconciliation with one person, through the gospel.
💡 Meditation Point
Forgiveness begins not with human willpower, but with the grace of the cross. As one whose great debt has been canceled, do not cling to small debts. True freedom and restored community are found only in Christ. Live today as a person of grace, forgiving through the gospel.
