Matthew 19:1–12 “Remember God’s Purpose in Marriage”
📖 Matthew 19:1–12 “Remember God’s Purpose in Marriage”
6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.
✨ Return to Creation — Marriage Is God’s Work
When the Pharisees questioned Jesus about divorce, He answered, “At the beginning” (19:4). Marriage is not a human invention but a covenant established within the order of creation. God created male and female and made them “one flesh,” signifying a total, personal union. Marriage is not merely a contract; it is a covenant. A covenant stands upon promise.
Today we often pursue convenience in relationships, but God speaks of holy union. Marriage is a gracious place where we see ourselves reflected through another.
✨ Hardness of Heart and the Restoration of the Gospel
Jesus said Moses permitted divorce “because your hearts were hard” (19:8). The problem is not the institution but human sinfulness. Sin is an active force that destroys relationships. Therefore, marriage cannot be sustained by effort alone.
Here the gospel shines. Christ did not abandon His church. The cross is the climax of covenantal love. Marriage too is renewed only within grace.
✨ Marriage and Singleness — Both for the Kingdom
Jesus also said that some choose to remain single “for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” (19:12). Whether married or single, the purpose is the same: the Kingdom of God. Marriage is a path of learning Christ’s love through one another. Singleness is a path of wholehearted devotion to the Lord. What matters is not status, but direction.
🙏 Prayer
Covenant-keeping God, renew our hardened hearts. Teach us Christ’s love through marriage, and in every circumstance help us seek first Your kingdom. May our relationships become a testimony to the gospel.
🔍 Application
-
Before trying to change your spouse, humble yourself before God’s Word.
-
In conflict, remember the covenant and respond first in prayer.
-
Whether married or single, set your life’s purpose on the Kingdom of God.
💡 Meditation Point
Marriage precedes human choice; it belongs to God’s created order. Hardness of heart breaks relationships, but the gospel restores covenant. Today, hold fast to God’s promise rather than your emotions. The grace of Christ builds the home.
