📖 Matthew 9:14–26 〈 New Wine in New Wineskins, the Gospel That Conquers Death 〉

26 News of this spread through all that region.

✨ The Question of Fasting — Revealing the Heart’s Center

The disciples of John came to Jesus and asked,
“Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Jesus answered them with the image of a wedding feast.
As long as the bridegroom is with them, it is not a time for mourning, but for joy.

This teaches us that faith is not centered on religious forms,
but on Jesus Christ Himself.
Spiritual zeal matters, but when that zeal obscures Christ,
it can end up hiding the gospel rather than revealing it.

✨ New Wine Must Be Poured into New Wineskins

Jesus teaches that new wine must not be poured into old wineskins.
The gospel is the power of God that renews our hearts and our entire lives.

Human effort or familiar religious habits cannot contain this gospel.
Conversion is not merely an outward change,
but a reorientation of the heart.
This is the new life that begins by grace.

✨ The Hand of Jesus That Overcomes Death

The synagogue leader’s daughter was already dead,
and the woman with the issue of blood had suffered for many years.
Yet Jesus steps directly into the center of their despair.

He takes the girl by the hand and raises her up.
To the woman He declares, “Your faith has healed you.”

Here, faith is not strength or achievement,
but empty hands reaching out in dependence on Jesus.
Even death is not the end in His presence.

✨ Where Justice and Mercy Meet

Matthew chapter 9 shows us a moment where God’s justice is fulfilled through mercy.
Jesus does not ignore the reality of sin and death.
Instead, He bears that reality upon Himself on the cross.

The gospel does not condemn us;
it calls us into new life.
Therefore, for those who are in Christ, judgment becomes the beginning of restoration.

🙏 Prayer

Lord, break our hearts that have grown comfortable with form and habit.
Do not let us confine the new wine of the gospel within old ways of thinking.
By Your Spirit, make us new wineskins.

Even in places of despair, help us hold firmly to Your hand.
Teach us to live in faith and in life.
Let us live by Christ alone.

🔍 Application

• Examine whether religious forms are obscuring Christ Himself.
• Pray that your heart would be renewed before God’s Word, not shaped merely by familiarity.
• Share the life-giving gospel with neighbors who are walking through despair.

💡 Meditation Point

New wine belongs in new wineskins.
Jesus Christ came to turn death into life.
Come to Him today with empty hands.
The gospel is still making us new.
