Matthew 19:13–22 < Those Worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven and Eternal Life >
📖 Matthew 19:13–22 < Those Worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven and Eternal Life >
16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked,
“Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”
✨ The One Like a Child Is Fit for the Kingdom
When people brought little children to Jesus, the disciples rebuked them.
But Jesus said,
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (19:14).
The kingdom of heaven does not belong to the capable.
It belongs to those who know they cannot stand on their own.
A child does not boast. A child simply looks to a guardian.
That is total dependence.
We cannot save ourselves.
Only those who cling to God’s grace are fit for the kingdom.
✨ The Rich Young Man’s Question — Yet One Thing Lacking
Then a rich young man asked,
“What good thing must I do to get eternal life?”
He claimed he had kept the commandments.
But Jesus exposed the depths of his heart.
“If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me” (19:21).
The issue was not money itself, but who the true master was.
He had obeyed the law outwardly, yet loved something more than God.
His exterior was religious, but another sat on the throne of his heart.
True conversion is a comprehensive change of lordship.
Eternal life is not an “addition of works,” but a “transfer of sovereignty.”
✨ The Kingdom and Eternal Life Come by Grace Alone
A child presents nothing.
The rich young man presented many things.
Yet the kingdom is entered by grace alone.
“Sola fide” means trusting not in what we have done, but in the righteousness Christ has accomplished.
Eternal life is not a reward earned by the quantity of devotion.
It is God’s gift to those who wholly trust in Jesus Christ.
🙏 Prayer
God of grace,
Help me lay down my righteousness and pride.
Teach me to depend on You like a child.
Do not allow anything else to sit on the throne of my heart.
Instead of trying to add something to gain eternal life,
let me cling wholly to Christ.
🔍 Application
Examine what you are holding onto in order to gain eternal life.
Consider whether Jesus Christ is truly the Lord of your life.
Proclaim the gospel patiently so that one soul may come to true conversion.
💡 Meditation Point
The kingdom of heaven is not for the strong.
It is for those who cling to grace because they have nowhere else to stand.
Eternal life belongs not to those who possess more,
but to those who surrender more deeply.
Stand before the Lord today with childlike faith.
