Matthew 20:17–28 < A Servant Who Follows the Lord >

📖 Matthew 20:17–28 < A Servant Who Follows the Lord >

28 Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.

Disciples Dreaming of Glory, the Lord Speaking of the Cross

As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, He foretold His suffering and death for the third time.

Yet the disciples were still asking, “Who is the greatest?”

The mother of James and John asked for places of honor.
It is not very different from us.

Even as we follow the Lord, we quietly expect recognition, position, and reward.

But the Lord clearly says:

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”

God Reverses the Standard of Greatness

The world says success is climbing higher.

But the kingdom of God honors the path of going lower.

Because Jesus Himself walked that path.

Although Jesus is the King, He came in the form of a servant.
And on the cross He gave His life as a ransom.

This ransom is the redemptive act in which He paid the price for our sins.

Salvation does not begin with our devotion.
It begins with Christ’s devotion.

This is the gospel of Christ alone and grace alone.

Serving Is Not the Condition of Salvation but Its Fruit

We are not saved by serving.

We serve because we have already been saved through the cross.

When we deeply realize that the service of Jesus has given us life,
only then can we begin to wash the feet of others.

In societies where relationships matter, avoiding conflict and maintaining harmony are often considered virtues.

But when the Holy Spirit renews our hearts,
we do not serve to be recognized.

We serve because we have been loved.

This is the fruit of true conversion.

Serving is the natural life of those who are saved.

🙏 Prayer

As we look to the cross of Jesus,
help us lay down our desire to be exalted.

Let us deeply understand the grace of the One who gave His life for us.

Hold us by that love so that we may joyfully serve as Your servants.

Help us choose the cross over position,
and obedience over recognition.

🔍 Application

Examine honestly what you expect while following the Lord.

Practice one small act of service today in the lowest place.

When serving feels burdensome, meditate first on the grace of the cross.

💡 Meditation Point

Jesus is the King, yet He came as a servant.

The cross of Jesus has given us life,
and that grace changes the direction of our lives.

True greatness is not rising higher.

It is willingly becoming low because we are captured by the gospel.

Today also, under the light of the cross,
live as a servant who reflects the heart of the Lord.
