Matthew 21:12–22 < When the Essence Is Lost, Judgment Follows >
📖 Matthew 21:12–22 < When the Essence Is Lost, Judgment Follows >
19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves.
Then he said to it,
“May you never bear fruit again!”
Immediately the tree withered.
✨ The Lord of the Temple Cleanses the Temple
Jesus entered the temple and drove out those who were buying and selling there.
“My house will be called a house of prayer” (Matt. 21:13).
The temple was meant to be a place where people meet God.
But people had turned it into a place of profit.
Outwardly they appeared religious,
but God was no longer at the center.
This was not merely anger.
It was the holy zeal of the covenant God restoring the worship of His people.
The church is a community built on the Word and prayer.
When the essence is lost, the form may remain, but life disappears.
✨ The Fig Tree Full of Leaves but Without Fruit
Jesus cursed the fig tree that had many leaves but no fruit.
This symbolized the spiritual condition of Israel.
There was plenty of religious activity on the outside.
But the fruit of faith that God seeks was missing.
Therefore theology cannot be separated from godliness.
Even if someone possesses much doctrinal knowledge,
without obedience and repentance in life, it is nothing more than leaves.
Religion separated from grace eventually withers.
✨ Faith Holds to the Essence
Jesus then spoke about faith:
“If you have faith and do not doubt…
whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it”
(Matt. 21:21–22).
True faith restores our relationship with God.
The Holy Spirit revives our dead hearts,
clothes us with the righteousness of Christ,
and enables us to bear fruit.
When the essence is lost, judgment follows.
But when we remain in the gospel, grace is restored.
🙏 Prayer
Holy God,
do not let our faith become like a tree full of leaves but without fruit.
Help us not to remain in empty form,
but to truly worship You through Your Word and prayer.
Renew our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
and let us bear the fruit of repentance, love, and obedience.
🔍 Application
Examine whether you are maintaining the appearance of faith while losing its essence.
Restore worship and prayer as a real encounter with God, not mere formality.
Make one concrete decision today to bear the fruit of obedience.
💡 Meditation Point
Both the temple and the fig tree had outward appearance.
But God was looking for fruit.
Faith that loses its essence eventually withers.
But faith that remains in the gospel comes alive again.
Today stand again upon
the Word-centered life, dependence on the Holy Spirit, and deep repentance.
Then the church and your life will bear fruit again.
