Matthew 21:23–32 < Unbelief and Disobedience that Fall into Self-Contradiction >

 📖 Matthew 21:23–32 < Unbelief and Disobedience that Fall into Self-Contradiction >

31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”

“The second,” they answered.

Jesus said to them,
“Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.”

A Heart that Questions Authority but Refuses Obedience

When Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, the chief priests and the elders asked Him,
“By what authority are you doing these things?”

They did not ask this question because they wanted to know the truth.
They asked it in order to judge Jesus.

Though they claimed to serve God, they rejected the Son of God.
This is the contradiction of unbelief.

Outwardly, a person may appear religious, yet the heart can remain closed.
True change happens when the Holy Spirit opens the heart.

The Words “I Will Go” and the Life that Actually Goes

Jesus told the parable of two sons.

The first said, “I will go,” but did not go.
The second said, “I will not,” but later repented and obeyed.

What appears to be obedience outwardly can actually be disobedience.

True obedience begins only when the Holy Spirit gives a new heart.
Obedience is not merely a decision; it is the fruit of grace.

From the Contradiction of Unbelief to the Unity of Grace

The religious leaders condemned tax collectors and prostitutes.
Yet they themselves did not repent.

Meanwhile, sinners heard John’s message and turned back to God.

Unbelief ultimately falls into self-contradiction.
People claim to know God’s will, yet reject His Son.

But the gospel does not leave us under condemnation.
When the righteousness of Christ is credited to us, our words and our lives become one.

🙏 Prayer

Holy God,
forgive the contradiction in us—
when our lips confess obedience but our hearts resist.

Break our hardened hearts through the Holy Spirit
and lead us into true repentance and obedience.

In the grace of Jesus Christ,
let our words and our lives become one.

🔍 Application

  • Examine whether you are treating the authority of Jesus as something to judge.

  • Ask yourself whether your confession of “I will obey” is reflected in your actions.

  • Seek the help of the Holy Spirit and begin practicing obedience in small ways.

💡 Meditation Point

Unbelief may appear religious on the outside, but it ultimately collapses into contradiction.
The gospel, however, gives us a new heart and brings unity between our words and our lives.

Today, come before God not with empty formality, but with repentance and faith.
In grace, obedience becomes not fear, but hope.
