Matthew 21:33–46 < Forgetting the Mission and the End of Desire >

📖 Matthew 21:33–46 < Forgetting the Mission and the End of Desire >

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them.
46 They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.

The Vineyard Entrusted, Yet the Tenants Forgot the Owner

Through the parable of the vineyard, Jesus reveals the spiritual reality of Israel.

The owner built a vineyard and entrusted it to tenants before going away on a journey.
But when the owner sent servants to collect the fruit, the tenants beat them, killed them, and finally even killed his son.

This parable reminds us that God is the Creator, and we are merely stewards of His vineyard.

However, when we forget our calling and begin to claim ownership, our mission becomes corrupted by desire.

The problem is not outward appearance but the condition of the heart.

Outwardly we may look religious, yet inwardly we reject God’s authority.
This is where the loss of mission begins.

When Mission Is Forgotten, Desire Becomes the Master

The tenants said,

“This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance” (Matthew 21:38).

The moment we mistake what is entrusted to us as our own possession, sin becomes justified.

Pushing God aside and trying to become the master ourselves—
this is the very essence of all human corruption.

What about us today?

Even while serving in the church, do we secretly seek recognition more than God’s glory?

Even in ministry, do we sometimes pursue our own achievements rather than honoring God?

The Stone the Builders Rejected

Yet the parable does not end with judgment.

“The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” (Matthew 21:42).

Humanity rejected the Son—Jesus Christ.
But God established the foundation of salvation through that very Son.

Human desire destroys.
But God’s grace begins a new history.

Even in the place where we forget our mission, God still calls us back through grace.

🙏 Prayer

Sovereign God,

Forgive the pride that held onto the life You entrusted to me as if it were my own.

Turn my heart away from the desires that made me forget my calling.

Help me cling to the grace by which You rebuilt my life through the rejected Christ,
and allow me to live today as a humble steward.

🔍 Application

What vineyard has God entrusted to you?
Examine your family, your church, and your ministry.

Ask yourself whether you have taken the seat of the owner.
Lay down your desire for recognition and control.

Rebuild your life upon Christ, the cornerstone.

💡 Meditation Point

When we forget our mission, desire begins to rule our lives.

But Jesus Christ—the stone that was rejected—
becomes the new foundation in the very place where our lives have collapsed.

Return the seat of the Master to God today,
and faithfully cultivate the vineyard entrusted to you.
