Matthew 22:15–22 < Caesar’s Things and God’s Things >
📖 Matthew 22:15–22 < Caesar’s Things and God’s Things >
21 They replied, “Caesar’s.”
Then he said to them,
“So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
✨ God’s Wisdom Revealed in a Trapping Question
The Pharisees and the Herodians asked Jesus a question to trap him.
“Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?”
It was a question designed to create trouble no matter how He answered.
But Jesus asked them to show Him a coin and look at the image on it.
“Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
This statement asks a deeper question:
Who is the true owner of human life?
The coin carried the image of the emperor,
but human beings carry the image of God.
God created humanity in His own image.
Therefore our entire lives belong to God.
✨ The Image of God and True Devotion
The purpose of human existence is to glorify God.
However, because of sin, people forget that their lives belong to God and become captivated by the power and desires of this world.
The religious leaders in Jesus’ time were no different.
They claimed to serve God, yet they were driven by political calculation and self-righteousness.
So Jesus’ words ask a piercing question:
“To whom are you giving your heart and your life?”
We live in the world and must fulfill responsibilities toward our nation and society.
Yet our ultimate loyalty belongs to God.
True devotion means offering our time, thoughts, plans, and even our dreams to God.
✨ The True Lordship Restored by the Gospel
Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins on the cross.
He redeemed us so that He might become our Lord.
Therefore, living a life offered to God
is not forced duty but a response to grace.
We work and live in this world,
but our hearts belong to God.
This is the true devotion restored by the gospel.
🙏 Prayer
God,
we often forget to whom our lives truly belong.
Guard our hearts from being captured by worldly approval and desires.
Remind us that our existence and our lives belong to You.
Through the grace of Jesus Christ who saved us,
give us the faith to offer our hearts and our lives to You.
🔍 Application
• Live today consciously remembering that you belong to God.
• Fulfill your responsibilities in the world,
but examine whether God is the true Lord of your heart.
• Choose one thing—your time, talent, or resources—
and offer it practically for the kingdom of God.
💡 Meditation Point
Coins carry the image of Caesar.
But we carry the image of God.
Though we live in this world,
the true Lord of our lives is God.
Today again,
live as one who belongs to God,
offering your thoughts and choices to Him.
