Matthew 26:14–25 < The Foolish Disciple Who Became an Instrument of Satan >
📖 Matthew 26:14–25 < The Foolish Disciple Who Became an Instrument of Satan >
23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.”
24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”
Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
✨ A Heart Far Though Physically Near
Judas Iscariot was one of the closest disciples to Jesus. Yet he ultimately betrayed Him. The issue was not proximity, but the heart. Though he was with Jesus, he did not love Him. Outwardly a disciple, inwardly separated from God. That gap became the entry point for Satan.
The same is true for us. Even if we are in church and hear the Word, if our hearts are not open to God, we can drift far away.
✨ Sin Enters Through Small Openings
Scripture tells us that Judas had a love for money. Small desires and compromises eventually led to betrayal. Judas did not become a traitor overnight. It was the result of gradually loving something more than God.
The same battle exists in our hearts today. If we treat small sins lightly, those small openings will eventually destroy the soul.
✨ Only the Gospel Holds Us Fast
Yet this passage does not end with warning alone. Jesus, knowing Judas would betray Him, still sat at the table with him until the end. This reveals the heart of the gospel. Humans betray, but God loves to the end.
Salvation is not based on our loyalty, but on the righteousness of Christ. This is “by grace alone, through faith alone.”
Therefore, we do not live in fear, but in grace. It is not that we hold onto God, but that God holds onto us.
🙏 Prayer
Lord, I confess that the heart of Judas is also within me. Though I speak of faith outwardly, examine whether my heart loves something more than You. Help me not to take small sins lightly, and guard my heart by Your Spirit.
Let me live clinging only to the grace of Jesus Christ.
🔍 Application
-
Examine what you love more than God in your heart.
-
Do not ignore small sins; repent immediately before God.
-
Evaluate not the form of your faith, but your real relationship with God.
💡 Meditation Point
Judas was close to Jesus, yet his heart was far away. Sin begins in small openings and eventually destroys the soul. Yet the gospel still holds us fast.
Today, do not rely on your own strength—live held by the grace of God.
