Matthew 26:47–56 < The Betraying Disciple, the Fleeing Disciples >
📖 Matthew 26:47–56 < The Betraying Disciple, the Fleeing Disciples >
56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
✨ Humanity That Falls Even in the Closest Place
Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss, and the other disciples all fled in fear. Even those who had been closest to Him—who heard His words and witnessed His miracles—collapsed in the moment of crisis.
This scene reveals the true nature of humanity. We are not beings capable of preserving our faith by our own strength. Because of sin, humanity is totally weak and easily collapses before circumstances. This is the reality of “total depravity.”
✨ God’s Redemption Accomplished Over Human Failure
What is astonishing is that even the disciples’ failure was within God’s plan. Jesus says it happened “so that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”
In other words, even human betrayal and fleeing are used within God’s redemptive history. Salvation does not depend on human loyalty or decision, but on the gracious work accomplished by God.
“The gospel is what God has done for us.”
✨ Grace Alone, Christ Alone
The disciples failed, but Jesus went all the way to the cross. Humans run away, but Christ does not stop. Humans betray, but Christ loves to the end.
Therefore, our salvation does not rest on the strength of our faith, but on the obedience of Christ.
🙏 Prayer
Faithful God, thank You for revealing our weakness. We lay before You our hearts that run away in the face of crisis. Let us live not by our own resolve, but by the grace of Jesus Christ, and help us trust in Your love that holds us to the very end.
🔍 Application
Examine whether you follow the Lord only when things are going well.
Do not hide your failures and weaknesses; cling only to the grace of Christ.
Do not condemn the weak; embrace them with the gospel and wait patiently.
💡 Meditation Point
All the disciples fled, but the gospel did not stop. God is greater than our failure. Do not rely on yourself today—hold fast to Christ alone.
