📖 Matthew 27:45–56 < True Faith Revealed at the Cross >
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”
✨ God’s Salvation Revealed in Darkness
From noon until three in the afternoon, darkness came over all the land. This signifies God’s righteous judgment against sin being placed upon Christ.
Jesus cried out, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which expresses separation from God—He bore the judgment that we deserved.
The cross of Christ is the real event of substitutionary atonement, where He took the penalty of sin in our place. At the cross, God’s justice and love are fulfilled together.
✨ The Curtain Torn, the Way Opened
The curtain of the temple was torn from top to bottom. This means the way to God has been opened.
No longer do we approach God through human effort or religious performance.
Only through the death of Christ can we come to God.
Faith, therefore, is not religious formality but restored relationship with God.
✨ The True Confession at the Cross
Ironically, the clearest confession of faith comes not from religious leaders, but from a Gentile centurion:
“Surely he was the Son of God!”
True faith does not come from knowledge or tradition.
It begins at the cross—where we see our sin and God’s grace.
🙏 Prayer
Lord of the cross, let me see the grace that bore the judgment I deserved.
Give me not a formal faith, but a true confession before the cross.
Help me rely not on my righteousness, but only on the righteousness of Christ.
Let me live in that grace.
🔍 Application
Meditate on the cross as “atonement for me.”
Examine whether your faith is real trust in Christ, not mere formality.
Share the message of the cross clearly and simply with one soul.
💡 Reflection Point
The cross exposes the reality of sin and reveals the depth of grace at the same time.
True faith begins not with religious zeal, but with the confession:
“Lord, You alone are my righteousness.”
Today, hold fast to the cross of Christ and choose to live by grace.
