📖 Psalm 90:1–17 < The Eternal God, Refuge for a Finite Life >
17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.
✨ The Eternal God, Refuge for Our Finite Lives
Moses was a man who deeply understood the brevity of life. “Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures” (Psalm 90:10). Life passes quickly, and what we try to hold onto easily fades away. Yet God is “our dwelling place throughout all generations.” In a changing world, there is One who does not change. God is not altered by circumstances; He remains the same forever. Therefore, though our lives are unstable, in God we are secure.
✨ The Brevity of Life Reveals Our Need for Grace
Psalm 90 reveals that we cannot live without grace. We are bound by time. Because of sin, we are even more fragile, and we cannot complete our lives on our own. Human beings are not self-sustaining; we are created to depend on God. That is why Moses prays, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). Recognizing the shortness of life is not despair—it is the beginning of wisdom.
✨ Only God Establishes Our Lives
We often try to build our lives through our own efforts. But the conclusion of Psalm 90 is clear: “Establish the work of our hands.” This prayer is crucial. For our labor to have meaning, God must uphold it. Our lives are not something we complete ourselves—they are completed by God. Therefore, the life of a believer is defined as “a life participating in the grace that God accomplishes.”
🙏 Prayer
Eternal God, have mercy on us as we live our short and fragile lives. Teach us to number our days so that we may not set our hearts on what is fleeting, but rely only on You. Uphold our labor and our lives by Your grace so that they will not be in vain. And lead us to discover true meaning and hope in Jesus Christ.
🔍 Application
Examine whether you are clinging to things that will pass away.
Live today consciously as a day before God.
Set aside time to pray, entrusting your plans to God rather than relying on yourself.
💡 Meditation Point
Life is short, but God is eternal. When finite beings rely on the eternal God, life becomes unshakable. Today, stand not on your own strength, but on the grace of God.
